Matthew McBurney is thankful to be the 2022 recipient of the Kimberly A. Nelson Foundation Scholarship and for all of the foundation's work to support the performing arts at BRHS. He has been a part
... of the BRHS Choir program for all four years of his high school career. In his freshman year he was in Mixed Coir. For the next three years, he was a part of the Symphonic Choir as the Baritone section leader. Also, he was a part of the Acapella Alliance for his Freshman, Sophomore, and Senior years. As a senior he made it into the Ensembros, the student run audition acapella ensemble.
Not only was Matthew a part of the choir program, he also took part in as many theater productions as he could. In seventh grade, he performed in the BRHS's production of Will Rogers Follies. He ran the lights for Cinderella as a Freshman. He was then promoted to sound for High School Memories as a Junior and Our Town and Chicago as a Senior. Outside of school he was very active in his church's groups and ministries. He volunteered for the Medical Equipment Ministry at The Pluckemin Presbyterian Church for his Freshman and Sophomore years. He also sings in the church's choir and rings in the advanced handbell choir.
Throughout his life, Matthew has assisted his father with both running sound and setting up for performances like the Sing-Off and Choir Concerts. He even made some guest appearances as the tech crew on stage. He plans to continue helping with sound for the Sing-Offs in the future. Matthew looks forward to continuing his singing and sound engineering career at Rowan University in the fall of 2022. He is honored to be a part of Kim's legacy and will continue to pay it forward.
